1a. Definitions:
Anarchy/Anarchism:
an= “without”
archon = “ruler”
When people hear the term anarchy, generally visions of chaos, destruction, and rioting fill their imaginations but those are misnomers. Anarchy in and of itself is simply the rejection of (and the rebellion to) any self-proclaimed legitimacy of human government. There is not a , and not necessarily violence (e.g. anarcho-pacifists, those believing in non-aggression). The common slogans: “Anarchy means no rulers, not no rules”, and “Order without rulers” applies here. This rebellion is not in the form of riots as shown on the news, but rather rebellion to various laws on the individual level. If there is any unjust law or asinine law, it should therefore be rejected and ignored, and one should live their lives as if that law did not exist in the first place.
(The Free Thought Project, acquired circa 2020)
Anarchy (or anarchism) states that no human has legitimate authority to govern any other human — and those who are wise anarchists will rightly conclude that any form of human governance inevitably results in tyranny and oppression of those it claims to govern because human authority necessarily requires governance through the use of force and coercion to obtain its goals. As a common example: If you don’t pay your taxes, a man with a gun (whether it’s the police, a federal agent, a judge with bailiff, etc…) will force you to pay a fine or go to jail, and if you resist or defend yourself against payment or arrest, you will be beaten and inevitably murdered by said authority. It’s unfortunate that pagan anarchists believe in a form of total depravity but without knowing the cause (which is sin – Romans 3:23), or the cure (which is Christ alone – Romans 5:19).
Christian Anarchism:
Anarchy relating to horizontal relationships (humanity) and not our vertical relationship (with God). It refers to no human rulers, but is ultimately akin to Divine monarchy with God as your only King, and Heaven as your only Kingdom. Also known as “No King But Christ”.
Furthermore…
We are called to preach the Gospel and make disciples of all nations, not live by the “convert or die” concept of other religions. Most of you will be taken aback by that statement because the statist (Christian or not) does not realize that by endorsing (drafting, voting, celebrating, obeying) government laws, that they are hurting others. The Statist immediately thinks “I am hurting no one”, but they fail to see past their first-person perspective, to realize that the State is used a weapon against peaceful people. Any State requires force to enforce its edicts & therefore will use all of its laws (just & unjust) and its police force as a third-party “club” to beat legality into its citizenry. A Theocracy or Theonomic-State are no different because they both desire a State (government), and is therefore statism (Christian Statism). A Christian State will do the same, it will use force to enforce all of its laws (just & unjust) and its police force as a third-party “club” to beat morality into a pagan or (other Christian denomination) population.
1b. Misconceptions & Poor Logical Arguments:
“Christian Anarchism is unBiblical” / ROMANS 13!!!:
If you choose to use the Romans 13 argument, you’re participating in a Sisyphean task. The burden of proof solely rests on the Christian Statist to explain Romans 13:3 “”, since Jesus, the apostles, the OT prophets, & other godly men died doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord by governments supposedly acting in the interest of God.
“Anarchy is antinomian”:
Christian Anarchism is not Antinomianism. We affirm that God’s Law is Good since it flows from the character of God Himself, therefore it (or as the theonomist states, “the general equity [principles] thereof”) should be followed, but God’s Law should only be followed at the individual level and not forced on others. The entirety of the 613 Old Testament laws are summarized in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20), and summarized further in The Two Greatest Commandments (). The Great Commission () states that we must create disciples of people from all nations, not to establish Christian nations as that would contradict Scripture.
“Christians should strive for Christian Nationalism”:
As we covered earlier, trying to Christianize a pagan nation works out as using force against peaceful people (either Christians, atheists, or other religions that don’t want to be ruled by a certain theonomist’s interpretation of what the “general equity” of a certain law is).
Theocracy is even worse, as

2a. Explicit Scripture references related to “No King But Christ”:
Jdg. 8:22-23 | Gideon refuses to rule over them as king, and says not even his son will rule. |
1 Sam. 8:5-22 | God should be your only King/Ruler. Desiring any king/ruler other than Him is a rejection of God (v7), strongly enough that God compares their desire of a human king/ruler to forsaking Him & blasphemous worship (v8). God warned the Israelites what would occur under a human ruler/king, that sinful mankind would rule unjustly/ungodly as tyrants:
|
Ps. 2:1-7 | The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed. |
Ps. 94:20-22 | Wicked rulers cannot be allied with God. They impose injustice through laws, they band against the righteous, and condemn the innocent to death. |
Is. 9:6-7 | Only Christ’s government is legitimate, it will continue to expand until there is no other. |
Is. 40:17 | All human nations are counted as less than nothing. |
Matt. 4:8-10 | Satan tempted Jesus with all the human kingdoms of the world, showing that he ruled over them (c.f. Jn. 12:31, 14:30, 16:11; Eph. 2:2), but Jesus replied that we should worship God alone (God alone is our King). |
Matt. 20:25-28 | The rulers of the Gentiles lord power/ruling/authority over them, “It shall not be so among you”. We should serve others in love instead of rule over them. |
Matt. 22:21 | “Render unto God the things that are God’s” [everything]. (See picture below) |
Jn. 18:35-37 | Pilate: “Your own nation delivered you over to me” Jesus: “No, My Kingdom is not of this world” |
1 Cor. 15:23-26 | Jesus will rule until He has destroyed every rule, and every authority, and every power; putting all His enemies under His feet, and finally delivering the Kingdom to God the Father. |
2 Cor. 6:14-15 | “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers”. What do unbelievers love? Statism, rulers, “lording these things over other” (Matthew 20). |
Eph. 6:12 | We do not wrestle with people, but the demonic spiritual authorities currently reigning. Knowing the other Scripture verses listed in this table about how God feels toward human government, we can infer that human government is demonic. |
Phil. 3:20-21 | “But our citizenship is in Heaven” |
Heb. 11:13-16 | The faithful realize they are strangers and exiles on the earth, seeking their homeland (Heaven), otherwise they would have returned from the land they came. Because they have desired a better country (Heaven, God’s Kingdom), God is not ashamed to be called their God and He has prepared for them a new city. |

We see countless times in the Old Testament where pagan kings/rulers desired to be worshiped as gods. Why is that? Because sinful mankind’s heart knows that rule, authority, & power are Divine traits of their Creator (God). Desire to rule over others is sinful because we are placing ourselves in a position reserved only for God Himself. Mankind with the curse of sin, limited knowledge, & limited power (we are not omniscient or omnipotent as God is) will inevitably rule in an ungodly, unjust manner either through commission of creating unjust laws, or omission by failing to remove unjust laws or restore justice. We will inevitably sin & hurt the people we promised to protect. This is exactly why humanity needs a Savior King (Jesus), and why all Christians should worship Him as such. Christians should not endorse politics or politicians by voting, or ascribing to a certain political party, or campaigning, or desiring to rule over others (governmental offices).
2b. Explicit Scripture references related to Christian Anarchism:
>>> Obedience to God via disobedience to human government is morally & ethically good:
Exod. 1:17,20 | The Hebrew midwives fear the Lord & obey Him by disobeying Pharaoh and sparing the lives of their male newborns. God approved and blessed them with children. |
Exod. 2-14 | God commands Moses to save His people. Moses disobeys Pharaoh several times and obeys God. God approves and saved the Israelites from the Egyptians. |
Josh. 6:25 | Rahab the prostitute obeyed God and hid the Israeli spies, God saved her and many relatives, and Rahab’s honor is preserved in the genealogy of Joseph (Christ’s adoptive father; Matthew 1:5, see picture below). |
Dan. 3:17-18 | Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego obeyed God and disobeyed Nebuchadnezzar, and did not worship the golden image he set up. God saved them (and Christ appeared with them in the fiery furnace [a theophany]), and He blessed them with Nebuchadnezzar promoting them in the kingdom. |
Dan. 6:10 | Daniel obeyed God and continued praying & disobeyed the law from Darius. God saved him from the den of lions. |
Matt. 2:12-21 | Mary & Joseph obeyed God by fleeing to Egypt, to protect baby Jesus from Herod’s decree to murder all children two and under in Bethlehem. |
Acts 5:29 | “But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than men’.” |
