It looks something like this:
But what does it mean?
It is the Arabic Letter Nun (pronounced noon), and is the Arabic version of the letter N.
The symbol for Nun is written on houses in Mosul, Iraq to indicate that a Christian lives there, the Nun standing for “Nazarene” as Jesus came from Nazareth. The Islamist State or ISIS, as they call themselves, are Muslim extremists that captured the city of Mosul earlier in July and are forcing Sharia Law on all Christians. The letter above is written on all homes that are occupied by Christians, where they are given three options: Convert to Islam, pay a “Christian tax”, or be executed. Later this was shortened to only two options: Convert or Die. Mosul was once a peaceful city where Muslims and Christians lived together, now there are no Christians in the city – they either died at the hands of the extremists, or were lucky enough to flee to nearby towns.
Since television media has mostly been silent about the genocide and exodus of Christians in Iraq, bloggers and other social media users have changed their icons and profile pictures to the Nun in order to raise awareness and hopefully gain support and help for the Iraqi Christians.
